Port Magazine

4.3.11

The recent release of ‘Port’ men’s magazine seems a breath of fresh air in today’s overly cluttered unbeautiful magazine culture that we have become so familiar with. The delicate sensitive and considerate use of visual language with immaculate typography makes me want to order it, read it and then place it at a perfect ninety degree angle on some stylish Scandinavian coffee table!

Dan Crowe editor of AnOther, co founder and editor of ‘Port’ this magazine designers has an array of famous contributors from journalist Jon Snow to actress Samantha Morton, to comedian Frank Skinner - behind the design of this new magazine are Kuchar Swara who run Swara and co and Matt Willey of Studio8 Design together they have created a magazinqe for the intelligent man and even balance of celebrity, news, design, art, culture, business & technology.

Inspired by the likes of the old style esquire magazine based and the ideals of ‘less is more’ the magazine seems to be a relaxing read – with the use of typography lending it self to the slower paced read. I love the mix of old school illustration and deep photography, with a lot more care taken to the articles written allowing room to breathe and articles taking centre stage – with the suspense of the full page openers leading on to the features. The features being a lot more edgy and quirky filtering through the mass media to bring you relevant information with a cultural authoritative tone.

The cover of the first issue is innovative, dramatic and evokes a sense of a peacefulness with a real earthy twist, using a beautiful font designed specifically created for the magazine by Matt, which also seems to add to this distinctive soothing read that the ‘Port’ designers have developed. Over all the magazine is something to treasure and keep, it is something special and thought provoking re in-forcing the need for printed matter, and it's relevance today in this digital age. Personally I cant wait to get my hands on the second issue and see how the design and the articles evolve parallel with the ‘Port’ brand.
