What's being talked about this week in the studio.
18.1.11
What has been on everyone lips and finger tips this week, is the re branding of the ever popular starbucks logo. When we first heard about the re branding we initially thought why? But having recently really, really looked at it, we are now thinking why yes! It seems the perfect organic evolution of the logo, after all the siren is what it is all about, originally sourced to capture the seafaring history of coffee and seattle's strong sea port roots. The siren is a 16th century norse wood cut found in a marine book. It being exactly what the founders were looking for, developed their logo around her. Thus now dropping the name and keeping the initial siren/mermaid logo, seems like a very natural move coinciding with an aim to produce products which have no coffee within them
Critics have said that the type on the logo, should never have gone as it will confuse people, some have suggested removing the siren and keeping the the text others say it is the perfect way for it to evolve, either way this has generated some serious hype about the company, and if you love Starbucks you will love the new bold move. After all when you have been around so long, and having your logo embedded into peoples psyche you need to mix it up and make some noise to get people talking again, and take a new perspective of what starbucks is.
Even though the re branding has had some bad press, you cant change back to the way it was the future is upon us and we look forward to their next move and the consumers reaction to the logo re brand when it is put into action.
Llanelli Run March 6th
After over indulging over Christmas everyone is keen to get back in to a more healthier style of living and what is motivating the guys here to swap that bar of chocolate for their running shoes is the upcoming Lanelli run. Set in the millennium coastal path in Carmarthen one of the most beautiful parts of South Wales coastline, a flat course and with no traffic, encompassing the Llanelli Waterside and overlooks the spectacular Gower Peninsula. – for first time marathon runner Jameila should prove a not so hard challenge and with the likes of Luke 2nd time marathon runner, we are sure he will be one of the first ones across that finish line… now we just have to encourage Julian & Matt to put their trainers on and call it a ‘team building’ experience. www.humanbeingactive.org/half-marathon
The upcoming Christmas party, take 2, in two weeks we will all be getting dressed up to have our office party, that was last month called off due to bad weather. Good food, good wine and good company! Wearing Santa hats, and exchanging our secret Santa presents with a chance to share a social time with colleagues. Who work so hard all year round!

It will be fascinating to see how consumers react to the change in logo, if they react at all. The new logo is an attractive, bold representation of the famous siren. I'm intrigued by Starbucks offering a wider range of products beyond their core product of coffee. Perhaps in a few years we will be so used to the new products and image that they will pass by with no comment. That will be the true test of the effectiveness of the new logo.
